Special Awards & Recognitions For Youth and Adults

BRAVERY AWARDS - National awards selected and presented by council, to be awarded within 6 months from the deed: for youth or adults (note: if you know of someone worthy of these awards, contact a professional at though Council Office or contact the Council Advancement & Recognition Chair)
Lifesaving Awards
- attempt to save life with accompanying measure of risk to self
  • Honor Medal with Crossed Palms: unusual heroism and extraordinary skil or resourcefulness, or attempting to save life with extreme risk to self
  • Honor Medal - considerable risk to self
  • Heroism Award - minimum risk to self
Meritorious Action Award - notable acts of service that need not involve attempt of rescue or risk to self but put into practice Scouting skills and/or ideals
  • Medal of Merit - rare or exceptional character that reflects an uncommon degree of concern for the well-being of other.
  • National Certificate of Merit - significant action of service that is deserving of special national recognition.
  • Local Council Certificate of Merit - does not qualify for National award, but deserves recognition.
RELIGIOUS EMBLEMS AWARDS To encourage members to grow stronger in their faith, religious groups have developed religious emblems programs. The Boy Scouts of America has approved of these programs and allows the emblems to be worn on the official uniform. The various religious groups administer the programs. Check with your local council service center or contact the religious organization directly to obtain the curriculum booklets. http://www.scouting.org/awards/religious/

(posthumous) - special recognition for a registered youth who dies by accident or illness (please contact someone in the Council Office if you know of a circumstance for which this award should be given).
William Hornaday Awards - Conservation awards
  • Unit certificate - national award selected, presented through Council to unit for unique conservation or environmental quality project.
  • Badge - to a Scout or Venturer for outstanding service to conservation or environmental quality in a council.
  • Bronze medal - to a Scout or Venturer for exceptional services to conservation or environmental quality in a council, nominated by council, selected by national committee.
  • Silver medal - to a Scout or Venturer for unusual and distinguished service to conservation or environmental quality on a state or regional basis. Only 8 per year nationally.
  • Gold medal - to adult Scouter or Venturing leader for unusual and distinguished service on a state, BSA region or national basis. One award per year.
