Winter Camp
Dear Scoutmasters and Senior Patrol Leaders,
This Winter Camp will mark the 43nd anniversary of long term winter camping at Camp Karankawa. Last year we had a small camp (180 campers) but in years past we have had large camps. With the changes we are planning for this year we expect to have a large camp with many happy scouts and scouters. We have several new badges that we are offering this year: Climbing, Radio, Coin Collecting and Horsemanship, among them.
Since one of the primary roles of scouting is to develop and use the patrol method this year we will introduce several opportunities for the units to practice what the Scoutmasters training preaches. There will be a “knot off” contest in which the patrols can compete against each other to see which patrol can tie the most knots in the limited time period. We look forward to a camp wide scout skills relay race in which each unit can put together a team to show their scout craft skills ending with one patrol and their Scoutmaster rising to the top. We will continue the challenges from the past camps as each troop maintains their camp sites with respect to the Outdoor Code and the Scoutmasters take the opportunity to test their skills creating tasty dutch oven treats. As always at Camp Karankawa we will continue our tradition of a great merit badge program by introducing some new badges.
We believe with all these enhancements Camp Karankawa Winter Camp 2009 will be a resounding success. We are looking forward to seeing you and your scouts at camp on December 26th.
