BSA Lifeguard training has been established to provide local camps with qualified members who can give knowledgeable leadership for camp programs on the water. The lifeguard course will be conducted beginning Friday June 7 at 1:00 p.m. The training course is divided into eight sessions each lasting approximately three hours. A capable swimmer is one who can swim 550 yards using the elementary backstroke, the breaststroke, the sidestroke, and either the crawl or trudgen, perform a surface dive and demonstrate the ability to rest by floating.
The total cost of the the course is $70 for registered scouts. For non-scouters the cost is $85 to cover registration/insurance fees. This is about half of what most courses cost. Note the cost of CPR only will be under $20. We also require the participants to volunteer for at least one camp. There are several camps throughout the year, and we have a great time! Note that adults need only volunteer for one day to demonstrate their skills. The camp dates are at the bottom of this e-mail.
Those who are interested in participating in this course may contact Bryan or Kelly Stewart at 979-299-3054 if you have any questions. Please be quick our course does fill up to capacity. We are limited in the number of students we can teach.
Participants will be camping at the pool during the course. They will need a current health form, tent, camp chair, sleeping gear (cot, pad, sleeping bag, pillows, etc), sunscreen, bug repellant, swimsuits, flip flops, closed toed shoes (required), pens or pencils, paper, lunch supplies (loaf of bread, sandwich meat, and chips), snacks and drinks other than water. We will provide breakfast and one hot meal per day. We will have ice chests available for cold food storage. It is also recommended, but not required, to bring a mask, fins, and snorkel if you have them. Adults do not have to camp overnight, but it is recommended.
Participants will need to check into at the pool area between 8:30 and 12:00 pm Friday morning. Be sure to watch speed coming into camp as there is a camp in session that weekend.
