STEM Designed To Cruch & Weather Merit Badge - Boy Scouts 2015

TIME: 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

DATE: January 10, 2015

PLACE: Sea Scout Base Galveston, 7511 Broadway, Galveston, TX 77554

COST: $35 for 1 Youth AND/OR 1 Parent/Guardian NOTE: For Boy Scout programs the parent/guardian is welcome to attend but not required.

PARTICIPANTS: 40 Scouts/40 parents


- Lunch/water bottle
- Rain gear
- Sweatshirt/light coat
- Pen & notebook
- Sunscreen/sunglasses
- Closed toe shoes - No sandals
- Scout uniform is not required but is encouraged...we want you to be comfortable. Pack & Troop - T-shirts are perfect.
- Completed prerequisites specific to the program you are attending
- Merit Badge Blue Card signed by your Scoutmaster
- Merit Badge book

MERIT BADGE: They must choose to do ONE of the following: 
A) Make one of the following instruments: wind vane, anemometer, rain gauge, hygrometer. Keep a daily weather log for one week using information from this instrument as well as from other sources such as local radio and television stations, NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards, and Internet sources (with your parent’s permission). Record the following information at the same time every day: wind direction and speed, temperature, precipitation, and types of clouds. Be sure to make a note of any morning dew or frost. In the log, also list the weather forecasts from radio or television at the same time each day and show how the weather really turned out. 
B) Visit a National Weather Service office or talk with a local radio or television weathercaster, private meteorologist, local agricultural extension service officer, or university meteorology instructor. Find out what type of weather is most dangerous or damaging to your community. Determine how severe weather and flood warnings reach the homes in your community.

STEM: Must do their own research about math for two hours: A) Watch math-related shows or documentaries that involve scientific models and modeling, physics, sports equipment design, bridge building, or cryptography; B)Research  websites (with your parent’s or guardian’s permission) that discuss and explain cryptography or the discoveries of people who worked extensively with cryptography; C)Read at least three articles about physics, math, modeling, or cryptography. You may wish to read about how technology and engineering are changing sports equipment, how and why triangles are used in construction, bridge building, engineering, climate and/or weather models, how banks keep information secure, or about the stock market.

Cancellation Policy
Refunds will only be granted to the original paying customer, whether it is the unit or individual. All unit refunds will be paid to the Committee Chairperson on record for that unit. All but 15% of an individual's fee is refundable, under certain circumstances (sickness, death in family, summer school, military deployment or relocation only) as long as it is requested in writing, with back-up documentation, and received in the Scout Service Center, 3020 53rd Street, Galveston, TX 77551-5917. Refund requests due to light weather issues, homesickness, and schedule conflicts, misinterpretation of printed council policies and procedures or reasons other than those noted above will not warrant a refund. In addition, partial refunds will not be granted for partial camp/event stays. If a camp or event is forced to be canceled by the council, because of severe weather, or circumstances prior to the camp or event occurring, the council will reschedule the camp/event or initiate the refund process. All requests are due to the council office within 15 days of the final day of the Camp/Event date.
