Merit Badges

Fish and Fish & Wildlife Management

When early humans discovered that there were fish in the waters and that the fish were good to eat, they began to devise methods for catching those fish. Over time, their methods of catching fish evolved from catching them with their hands, to nets, and finally using lures on poles. The Fishing merit badge program will help you explore the rich history of fishing, and its progression from a necessity for food to the sport it is today. You will learn about the different types of fishing gear, as well as how and when to use the different types of gear. For the Fish & Wildlife Management merit badge, you will learn about wildlife conservation, and why it is important for the health of the animal populations. You will spend time researching local species, how they are affected by human interactions, and how humans can help keep their populations healthy. By taking these two merit badge programs together, you will gain an in-depth understanding of the animals in the ocean, as well as animals on land, and how we as humans can safely interact with their environments.

Oceanography

Oceanography covers all aspects of ocean study and exploration, and the Oceanography merit badge will help you study and learn about the oceans. The oceans cover more than 70 percent of our planet, and this merit badge will let you explore the interactions between the vast oceans and our lands. You will learn about the different branches of Oceanography, and you will study the bottom of the ocean. By completing experiments and research, you will gain a better understanding of how the ocean waters affect the animals, plants, and land that they touch.
