+ The Council Service Center will close early at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, December 15, 2017, for our staff holiday party. For the holidays, we will be closed from Friday, December 22, 2017 through Monday, December 25, 2017. For New Year's we will close on Friday, December 29, 2017 through Monday, January 1, 2018.

+ SILVER BEAVER APPLICATIONS: The Silver Beaver Awards Committee is accepting applications until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, December 15, 2017, for adult Scouters you believe qualify for this prestigious award. The Silver Beaver Award was introduced in 1931 and is a council?level distinguished service award of the Boy Scouts of America.  Recipients of this award are registered Scouters who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the council.  To prevent embarrassment, the candidate should not be notified of this nomination.  Recipients will be notified at the appropriate time. Please review the application, follow the instructions, and return completed applications to the council office located at 3020 53rd Street, Galveston, Texas 77551 or email the application to Tina Brendle at tina.brendle@scouting.org.

+ GET TRAINED: Training of youth and adult leaders is very important to the success of the Boy Scout Program. The national office is now offering some Basic Adult Leader Training and supplemental training online. Adult training begins with Fast Start and Youth Protection Training.


+ EAGLE PALMS UPDATE FOR OCTOBER: All current Boy Scouts — even those who completed their Eagle Scout board of review before Aug. 1, 2017 — are now entitled to receive Eagle Palms for merit badges earned before their Eagle board of review.

+ CAMPOUT REQUIREMENTS FOR FIRST & SECOND CLASS HAVE CHANGEDThe number of overnight campouts required for a young man to earn the Second Class and First Class ranks will be reduced under new requirements that take effect Aug. 1, 2017.

+ PHILMONT 2019 LOTTERY IS OPEN: Slots in 2019 will be allocated through an online lottery. The lottery window opens at 9 a.m. MDT on Oct. 25 and closes at 11:59 p.m. MST on Nov. 15. The lottery-based registration process gives everyone an equal chance at some of Philmont’s most popular adventures, most notably seven-day treks throughout the summer and 12-day treks in June. Interested? Register during the lottery window to give your crew the best chance.
